It is January and it is cold outside. There is an air of immobility everywhere, but nature can't stop and demands to renew its cycle, as always. So it happens that at our farm there is no time to complain: the time has come to prepare the greenhouse for our ox-heart tomatoes!
As usual, our work is a team effort. The whole family is involved in the work, and everyone contributes as much as they can. There are those who prepare the grooves in which the plants are to be placed, and those who fix the line to ensure that the groove is straight: every detail is important, and cooperation at this stage is crucial.
Along each pole that supports the greenhouse there are five furrows in which we will plant the tomatoes. The fishing line is used to allow us to check the alignment of the furrows, while for the correct distance between them we take the tube at the bottom of the greenhouse as a reference point. This has holes every 50 centimetres or so, where we will insert smaller pipes to carry water for drip irrigation of the plants.
Our job is certainly not easy and involves many sacrifices. Yet we have been doing it gladly for years, respecting the seasonality of fruit and vegetables. This gives us the strength to go on, discovering the renewal of the cycle of life, and finding ourselves, each time, amazed at the beauty and goodness of our products.
For many, this may be a triviality; for us it is the meaning of our work.
This is how we prepare the furrows in the greenhouse soil
